What is ZEISS SMILE?
ZEISS SMILE is a relatively new vision correction advancement in the laser vision correction community. As a less invasive alternative to LASIK eye surgery, ZEISS SMILE has been available since 2011 and is only offered by premier vision correction centers across the country.
Using a specialized laser, a surgeon can correct nearsightedness with or without astigmatism to reduce your need for glasses and contact lenses. Seen as even less invasive than LASIK, flapless, and bladeless treatment, many eye surgeons see that ZEISS SMILE has all of the benefits of LASIK, and it offers patients the ability to get back to their daily activities quicker.
Conditions ZEISS Smile Corrects
ZEISS SMILE is a currently approved procedure for individuals with myopia (nearsightedness) with or without astigmatism. If you have a hard time seeing faraway objects clearly, you might have myopia (nearsightedness). ZEISS treats this condition in addition to astigmatism, which is when your cornea has more of an oval shape, leading to excessive headaches and routine eye strain.
If you think you would be a quality candidate for ZEISS laser eye surgery and are seeking a long-term solution for your eye issues, give Clear Choice Laser a call. Not only will we be able to determine if you are a good fit for ZEISS, but we will also point you in a different direction that better suits your eye needs if not proven to be a match.

How the Procedure Works
Step 1: Preparation
Prior to your procedure, your surgeon will use anesthetic drops to numb your eye. Next, your eye is then fitted to an eyelid holder and a contact glass. This ensures that your eye remains open and still during the surgery.
Step 2: Reshaping Your Cornea
In as little as 10 seconds, the ZEISS VisuMax femtosecond laser creates a small opening (about 4-6 mm) in your corneal tissue, concentrating solely on the refractive error.
Step 3: Removing the Lenticule
From there, your surgeon will remove the lenticule through the laser-created opening.
Step 4: Correcting Your Vision
By removing the lenticule, the shape of your cornea is effectively altered, correcting your vision. As your eye heals, the small opening created by the laser will begin to heal itself.
Step 5: Recovery
During the recovery process, your doctor may advise that you either return to daily activities immediately or take some time off. When it comes to being in a dusty and smoky environment for long periods of time, it is essential to avoid those areas until otherwise approved by your doctor.
Benefits of ZEISS SMILE Procedure
ZEISS SMILE is gaining popularity for its effectiveness and added benefits when compared to LASIK eye surgery. With its speedy recovery times and limited side effects like less dry eye when compared to LASIK, ZEISS is becoming the top choice for individuals seeking corrective eye care. The most significant difference and benefit of ZEISS is that it is a flapless procedure, meaning it is less invasive.

What’s Different About VISUMAX 800 vs. the 500
In comparison to the VISUMAX 500, the VISUMAX 800 has increased laser pulse frequency, leading to shorter procedure time. This ensures patients remain comfortable during treatment, while also significantly reducing risks for complications. Kathleen Jee, MD was the first female in the US to use the Visumax800 post approval. Clear Choice Custom LASIK Center is the first LASIK Center in Ohio to offer SMILE with the ZEISS Visumax 800 laser.
Eligibility For ZEISS SMILE
To find out if you are a candidate for ZEISS SMILE, you must have a free consultation with the Clear Choice Custom LASIK Center team.
To be considered, you need to be at least 18 years old and have a stable prescription that has not changed more than 0.50 diopters the year before receiving surgery. If you have healthy eyes without retinal issues, eye disease, or scarring, ZEISS SMILE laser surgery could be a suitable procedure for your corrective eye care.
Some eye conditions such as keratoconus, cataracts, and glaucoma can preclude you from being a good candidate for SMILE.
