How to use your FSA & HSA for LASIK Eye Surgery

Calendar IconAmid the busyness of fulfilling Christmas lists, attending parties and shopping for holiday dinner ingredients, fundamentally important things like our health and finances can be overlooked in December. ClearChoice Custom LASIK Center urges all owners Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs) to check their balances and make sure no money is “left on the table” when you ring in 2019.

These accounts enable you to pay for current health expenses and save for future qualified medical expenses on a tax-free basis. You own and you control the money in your accounts, so make sure you truly “get your money’s worth” before the end of 2018.

How Much Can You Contribute?

Piggy Bank IconFor 2018, the maximum annual HSA contribution for individuals was $3,450, and $6,900 for individuals with family coverage. While there can be grace periods, funds remaining in an FSA are forfeited at the end of the year.

FSAs are limited to $2,650 per year per employer. If you’re married, your spouse can put up to $2,650 in an employer FSA, too. Both options allow you to set aside tax-free funds to pay for qualified out-of-pocket medical expenses.

Your employer’s Human Resources Department can help you determine what out-of-pocket medical expenses are eligible under your plan. While you can’t use the funds for health insurance premiums, babysitting or Botox, you can use them to pay for health-related purchases like prescriptions and first-aid kits, to cover deductibles and to offset the cost of elective surgeries, such as laser (LASIK) eye surgery at ClearChoice Custom LASIK Center.

We’re Experienced With HSA & FSA:

Debit Card IconClearChoice works with many patients who use their FSA and HSA funds in November and December to pay for a portion or all of their LASIK surgery. Because this popular payment option is frequently used at ClearChoice, our staff is well versed in working with savvy patients who want to have their vision corrected with LASIK surgery while maximizing their health-care dollars.

We recognize that no one needs additional financial stress at this time of year, and ClearChoice Custom LASIK Center will processes payment through the debit card tied to the bank that holds your FSA or HSA. If your account terms require you to submit paperwork for a reimbursement, ClearChoice will provide all the documentation required to make that process go smoothly. We care about your vision and making LASIK surgery the best gift you can give yourself.

Make Sure You’re Good:

Clipboard IconNow is the time to make two inquires. First, check the balance in your FSA account and verify with your Human Resources Department that LASIK surgery is an allowable expense under your plan. Then call to schedule a free LASIK consultation or schedule online.

If you have an HSA account, your contributions roll over year to year, but it is still a good idea to take a few minutes to check your balance and see where you stand going into 2019.

If LASIK surgery is something you’ve been considering, now is a good time to schedule a free consultation, determine the cost of the surgery and adjust your contributions to the 2019 FSA or HSA as necessary. Put your visual needs first and slip LASIK surgery into that empty slot on your 2018 calendar!
